A childhood memory that has etched into my mind is the Saturday afternoon oil massage and bath with Shikakai powder our mom would give us sisters. Both my sister and I had thick, long hair which everyone would envy and ask what our mom did for such beautiful hair. As children we would not know what to answer and would reply ‘nothing’ and run away! But as we grew and encountered some hair problems ourselves, we understood the importance and the effort mom would put in to care for us.
Hair oiling is one of the most time-tested steps in hair care that should never be undermined.
Mom would heat up Castor oil and apply to our scalp and the length of the hair and made us wait for at least 1 hour till the water was hot. This is a ritual in Ayurveda known as Abhyanga, where the whole body is anointed with herbal oil and massaged before taking a hot water bath. But unfortunately, this step is falling out of fad, is quite often skipped, and has become a luxury Spa treatment. Just including a scalp massage with a hair oil can make a huge difference on your hair and scalp health.
It hydrates and nourishes your hair and scalp, strengthens hair follicles, promotes hair growth, and prevents hair breakage.
Oils have fatty acids that replace the lost lipids in the Scalp skin and hair. Lipid loss occurs due to various factors like exposure to harsh chemicals, styling and even pollution. Lipids play an especially important role in making the hair look and feel healthy. They help maintain the shine and luster of hair and makes hair more manageable.
It is also recommended to gives your scalp a gentle massage using fingertips in circular motion. This kind of massage improves blood circulation to the scalp and stimulates the hair follicles thereby supports hair growth. This practice can also increase the tensile strength of the hair, prevents breakage, reduces frizz, and makes hair more manageable.
